Level 2 - Moving Around & Making Selections

Moving Around the Workspace: VectorWorks provides everal ways to move around within a drawing file, allowing you to look at the whole drawing or at select portions of it.
The following is a list and explanation of each of the navigation tools.


Panning: Use the Pan tool to grab the drawing and move it around the drawing area, changing the area of display.
  1. Select the Pan tool from the 2D Tools palette
  2. Move the hand into the drawing window
  3. Click and hold the mouse, and drag the drawing around the screen
  4. When the drawing shows the desired area, release the mouse.

Arrow keys: Use the Arrow keys on your keyboard to pan the view. Pressing a key once moves the drawing one half-screen in the direction of the arrow.

Move Page: The Move Page tool changes the position of the print boundary within the drawing area. Though the page boundary moves, the rulers, orgin, and objects remain fixed.
  1. Select the Move Page tool from the 2D Tools palette
  2. Click and drag the page outline to the desired location
  3. Click to set the position of the page

Zoom In: The Zoom In Tool is an easy way to quickly magnify the drawing. Each time the Zoom In tool is double-clicked, VectorWorks doubles the magnification of the drawing.
You can also utilize the
Marquee (dotted box) method described below
  1. Select the Zoom In tool from the 2D Tools palette
  2. Click and drag a marquee (dotted) box around the portion of the drawing to magnify
  3. Click to zoom

Zoom Out: Each time the Zoom Out tool is double-clicked, VectorWorks reduces by one-half the magnification of the drawing.
A single click on the View bar performs the same action

You can also utilize the
Marquee (dotted box) method described below
  1. Select the Zoom Out tool from the 2D Tools palette
  2. Click and drag a marquee (dotted) box around the portion of the drawing to reduce
  3. Click again to set the zoom out

Making Selections: Selection involves clicking or marqueeing an object to make it the currently active object. When a tool is selected, the drawing area standard arrow cursor changes to represent the selected tool.

Objects in VectorWorks can be selected in several ways.
The Shift and Option keys are modifiers for selection actions

Use the following table for key combination selection methods:

Selection Action
Click
Standard Selection method. Selects a single object only.
Option - Click
Creates a copy of the object and places it directly over the selected object
Shift - Click
Allows selection/deselection of multiple objects by clicking specified objects. Also can be used to deselect objects selected with other methods. Deselecting a selected object does not affect other selected objects.
Option - Drag
Drags a copy of the object wherever the mouse button is released.
Marquee
Selects all objects completely contained within a marquee box.
Shift - Marquee
Reverses selection status of objects inside a marquee box. If objects inside the marquee box selected, this method deselects those objects.
Option - Marquee
Selects all objects that a marquee box passes through as well as those contained within the box.

2D Selection Tool: When using the 2D Selection tool, four modes are displayed on the Mode bar.
Use these modes to resize objects, select objects using free-form or a rectangular marquee

Use the following table for key combination selection methods:

Allows resizing by adjusting the selection handles that appear on a selected object. When NOT selected, objects move without affecting size
WALL INSERTION MODE
Architectural Tools (May not be used in this class setting)
RECTANGLE MODE
Draws a marquee box around objects when selecting
LASSO MODE
Draws a free-form marquee, allowing a more exact selection of irregular 2D shapes.

Select All: The select all command selects all visible objects in the editable layers. From the Edit menu, select Select All (Apple "A" will also do this)

Previous Selection: The previous selection command reselects the set of objects that were most recently selected. From the Edit menu, select Previous Selection (No keyboard shortcut )
