Library Collection

Books:

The collection contains approximately 45,000 volumes. There is a special collection of books on Adlai E. Stevenson. Books are accessible through our Dynix iPAC on-line catalog.

Magazines:

There are over 250 magazine titles in our holdings, and in addition access to some full text magazines available on cd-rom through Ebsco Magazine Archives or online through Proquest Direct or Ebsco Host. The hard copies of magazines include some special collections such as National Geographic from 1911 to the present as well as Life (1937-1948). There are also C-SPAN transcripts from 10/29/90 to 5/14/95, which are searchable through the book catalog.

Stevenson teachers may wish to look at our current magazine subscription list in order to select magazines from which they wish to request articles on a regular basis. Please ask the librarian for this request form.

Newspapers:

There are 6 papers kept in hard copy for two months. These include the USA Today, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, The Daily Herald, and 2 Pioneer Press local papers. New York Times and Chicago Tribune are full text on CD-ROM from 1990. The current three months of New York Times is also accessible full-text online through Proquest Direct along with the Wall Street Journal and many other US and International newspapers. Proquest also provides the Historical New York Times database of many select full-text of articles from 1856 to 1985. The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and The Daily Herald is available full text online from 1990 to current through the Chicagoland Newspapers database in Newsbank Infoweb along with many other selected newspaper sources from 1991. The Chicago Tribune Historical Archive also available from Newsbank Infoweb provides full text of select Tribune articles from 1849 to 1980. There are also other selected newspapers on microform going back to 1763. Ebsco Host also provides a newspaper database of over 200 full text U.S. regional, some international and newswires.

Pamphlet File:

The file is a collection of pamphlets and articles from newspapers on a variety of topics. The index is at the circulation desk.

Online Resources and Internet:

The internet is available on the library network through netscape as well as throughout the school. A subject web directory is provided as well as subscription databases that include encyclopedias, magazines and newspaper indexes, and other reference sources.
