Our Favorite FMP Activity: Letters to our Freshman

Each student mentor writes a letter of introduction to their freshmen. On the first day of advisory, the student mentors give each of their freshmen a copy of the letter. Then they ask their freshmen to write a letter which includes their interests, all about their family or just things about themselves to help us get to know each freshman. Some of our faculty advisors have also written a letter to their freshmen. It's fun and we find it's a great way to begin to develop friendships. Below are two sample letters from our programs co-presidents.

Sample 1

Dear Freshman,

Hi and welcome to Stevenson High School! My name is Kelly and I am a junior this year. I am so excited to start my first year as an FMP. I had such a positive experience with the program my freshman year and I am going to try in every way possible to make it that way for you. I not only will be your guide and mentor throughout your freshman year, but also a guide and mentor for whenever else you may need my assistance. I will always be there to lend a helping hand. I will help to make your first year of High School go by smoothly while having a lot of fun. This year is going to fly by and be over before you know it so take advantage of all the opportunities that lie ahead.

Since we will be spending a lot of time together there are some things about me I would like you to know. I play Basketball and Softball here at Stevenson. Playing sports here at Stevenson was the main reason my transition from junior high went so smoothly. I was able to meet so many friends who all shared the same love for the game whether it was basketball or softball. I found each new year to only get better. I walked away from it with memories that will last a lifetime. While sports consume most of my free time, I also enjoy art. I find it to be a nice break in my day when I can relax and enjoy myself. I am very easy to talk to so please don't hesitate to ask a question. Remember that I too was once a freshman and I can relate well to any trouble you may have. I will always be willing to give advice. The best advice I can give you is to get involved. You are going to hear it from everyone, but I can't emphasize enough how true it really is. There are so many opportunities here at Stevenson from clubs to sports. Try something new! You will find the experiences and memories you take away to be very rewarding. Take full advantage of it now and I promise you will be grateful in the end.

I can't wait to get to know each and every one of you and start a friendship that will last a lifetime. The next four years of high school are going to fly by and it is up to you to make them memorable. I hope your first few days have been good, and I wish you good luck on the rest of the year!

Sincerely,

Kelly

Sample 2

Dear Freshmen,

Hey! Welcome to Stevenson. You've finally made it. But, now what? The school is so big, you can't find anything, and you don't know anybody. That's what I'm here for.

My name is Corey and I am a Junior here at Stevenson. I am one of your three student advisors in the Freshmen Mentor Program, or the FMP. We're here to help you adjust with this big and awesome place called Stevenson. Each day during the week (except Friday), you will be meeting with us for 20 minutes during your lunch period. We're going to play games, do different activities, tell you important information, and answer any questions that you might have. Also, if you are nervous, relax. You will adjust to the size and realize that it's not so bad. I'm going to be here to help you along the way, if you have a problem with homework, social life, or anything else, don't hesitate to ask.

In order to have the best time at Stevenson, you need to get involved in the many things the school has to offer. There are so many clubs, athletic teams, and groups that there is something for everyone. From football to poms to juggling to GIVE, everyone can join in and meet new people. And, even if there isn't a club for your favorite band, you can start your own and meet people with the same interest in that band. Also, take classes that interest you. These classes can help you decide what you want to do later in life and help you get a jump start on it.

Now, I want to tell you a little bit about myself. At Stevenson, I play varsity football and I also play baseball. I've played baseball my whole Iife. I have also been a member of the wrestling team. I have a little brother who is a sophomore here and I have a dog named Jake that's a pug. Also, I work at the Target in Wheeling as a security guard. When I'm not working, playing sports, or doing homework, I like hanging out with my friends. There's so much more that you guys will learn as the year will go on. Hopefully, I'll learn as much about you guys as you will learn from me.

Sincerely,

Corey
