About the Peer Helpers

The SHS Peer Helpers are nominated by Stevenson faculty and staff in the Spring of every school year. Peer Helpers is only open to juniors and seniors and we typically have between 30-40 members. We look for students who have good communication skills, show leadership, have positive values, are role models and are hardworking responsible young adults. Students are also expected to follow the No Use Contract. Peer Helpers are well respected among the Stevenson Community.

Being a Peer Helper is a time commitment. We participate in an intensive week long training during the summer and we continue training throughout the school year. Throughout the trainings we focus on positive communication, leadership, group dynamics, substance abuse, cultural diversity, date rape, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and questioning youth issues, HIV/AIDS awareness and much more.

Stevenson Peer Helpers are actively involved in the community and in the school. We serve as peer counselors to help resolve student conflicts. In addition, we maintain a Drop In Center where any Stevenson student can find a "friendly supportive ear." They can also access information and resources on teen related issues. We also host Violence Prevention Week, AIDS Awareness Week, Yellow Ribbon/Mental Health Week as well as a school supply drive.

Overall, the Peer Helpers are active, valuable leaders and role models at Stevenson High School.
